Hong Kong's Cattle Conundrum

2022 - Ongoing

In recent years, there have been frequent incidents of human-cattle collisions in Hong Kong's urban areas, which have raised public concern about the management and conservation of cattle.

Some people believe that cattle pose a threat to road safety and call on the government to relocate them, while others strongly advocate for the rights of cattle to survive, and the two voices continue to debate. There are about 1,110 yellow cattle and 160 water buffalo in Hong Kong, mainly distributed on Lantau Island.

In the past, these cattle were widely used as draft animals to assist Hong Kong farmers in planting rice. However, with the rapid development of Hong Kong's economy, agriculture gradually declined, and these cattle gradually became stray cattle.

Under public opinion, some people are willing to stand up for the cattle and defend them. They believe that the cattle have lost their original habitat and have been fragmented, which eventually leads to water buffalo leaving their habitat to search for food and territory, increasing the risk of human-cattle conflicts.

These cattle protectors try to resolve the misunderstanding between humans and cattle, and feed and treat the cattle in designated locations to let the cattle know that this is their new habitat.

It is hoped that the difficulty of coexistence between humans and cattle can be explored, the survival status and conservation issues of cattle can be understood, and the efforts and care of these cattle protectors can be introduced.
