At the Edge of Home

A narrow river separates Hong Kong from mainland China. Along Hong Kong’s northern edge, farmland, fishponds and long-established villages are being transformed under the Northern Metropolis, a 30,000-hectare development plan intended to create new housing, infrastructure and economic districts.

This ongoing project documents communities living through compulsory land resumption, clearance and displacement, moving between everyday village life and the physical transformation of the landscape. It also collects objects left behind in vacated homes and villages, and includes collaborative portraits in which residents write directly onto their photographs, recording their own memories, reflections and responses to the changes around them.

Bringing together documentary photographs, found objects and residents’ own words, the work traces how large-scale development is reshaping not only the landscape, but also people’s relationships to home, memory and belonging.
